Bark Mantis

24372473508_dd6b413987_k.jpg

Soft lighting on a young bark mantis nymph (Ciulfina sp.) in the Northern Territory of Australia, very reminiscent of Liturgusa spp. in Central and South America. These mantids are very common here and sometimes move their forearms in a robotic circular motion when at rest. I watched one do so for 15 minutes while the mantis picked up small prey that came near it on the tree. I will follow up with photos and footage of the behavior.

Photographed in situ [1]
