Frilly Deimatic Display

A sunlit frilly as I released her yesterday afternoon. This photo certainly lends itself to the early theory of the frill’s role in thermoregulation, but alas that is not the case. Maybe I need a photo of a frilly jumping from the canopy to support the other early theory of the frill as a parachuting mechanism. After deploying their frills, frillies will run to a nearby tree to hide around the trunk and climb to the canopy. Sometimes they run all the way up my leg by mistake! Females are usually all bluff, but males are larger and will bite if restrained.

Caught with appropriate permits for scientific study; photographed when released [5]
