Water Buffalo in the Top End

A water buffalo gang (Bubalus bubalis) from the Top End. Although these are not feral, wild buffalo populations occur throughout the wetland regions in the NT. They are ecosystem engineers, capable of significantly altering wetland habitat through trampling and consumption of vegetation. Occasionally at Fogg Dam I spotted feral herds from a great distance, but they usually fled immediately. A little over a month ago a deranged buffalo was ramming cars on the Arnhem highway… I’ll just stick with reptiles.

Photographed in situ [1]
