Eclosing too late for halloween here in the Top End. This macro shot is of the ventral hindwing of Hypocysta adiante antirius, a subspecies of the orange ringlet (Nymphalid: Satyrinae) that occurs in the northern regions of Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Orange ringlets sit about 1.75 cm tall and flutter around in grassy habitat. Adults drink nectar from flowers and search for suitable oviposition sites on grasses for their future larvae. Every time I approached the butterfly from a different angle it rotated its body to orient the eyespots directly at me.
