A tawny frogmouth (Podargus strigoides) keeps its eyes on me as I move through the forest in my nocturnal search for the frillies, making sure to distinguish my footsteps from a large insect flailing on the ground. These incredible and unique-looking birds were common forest inhabitants — calling, foraging, and flying silently through the eucalypts. One frogmouth even landed two feet in front of me and snatched up an insect attracted to my head torch. It was amazing to see the bird in absolutely stunning detail for about five seconds.
