Jacky dragons (Amphibolurus muricatus) are medium-sized spiky agamids found throughout southeastern Australia. This young jacky had found a comfortable spot along a lichen-covered rock face in the Blue Mountains, letting me position my lens almost in contact with the lizard. Like most small dragons they escape detection through crypsis, in this case reserving an escape maneuver until the last possible moment. Jacky dragons are sometimes confused with young bearded dragons (Pogona spp.), but can be easily differentiated by a bright yellow mouth and five vertebral crests.
