Purple-winged Mantis

As I was photographing a dragonfly at night, I noticed two large purple eyes peering out at me. It was a mantis (Tenodera australasiae), camouflaged against the dry grasses with its eyes locked on me. When I approached it stretched out its raptorial forelimbs to appear even more cryptic.

Photographed in situ [1]
