Freshwater Crocodile

A freshwater crocodile (Crocodylus johnsoni) rests on the banks of a small island in Western Australia as a storm surge strengthens. While swimming a few days ago a large freshie like this one surfaced about 4 meters away from me.The three seconds of powerful eye contact before it submerged was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had so far. As the croc disappeared into the depths I felt lucky that it was inquisitive enough to come so close to me. Freshies are shy animals and generally do not pose a threat to humans unlike their larger relative, the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus).
