Forest Kingfisher

Staredown with a forest kingfisher (Todiramphus macleayii) with almost a pure green bokeh from the floodplain… zoom in and look at those eyelashes! With this head-on perspective, the pale yellow blotches almost look like a pair of eyes. I was not the only subject of this kingfisher’s gaze. It was also looking down skeptically at a paperbark flycatcher (Myiagra nana) repetitively failing to grab a flailing grasshopper.

Photographed in situ [1]
